P.B.C.F.R. Crew Recognized as REAL HEROES By American Red Cross 2004

The Real Heroes Breakfast is an annual event for the Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter.  This year will be a special one as we honor our Hurricane Heroes, those who have gone beyond the normal scope of their job or their personal responsibility to save a life or help those in critical need as a result of the hurricanes. The goals of this event are to recognize local acts of heroism, highlight the positive aspects of our community, and expand our Chapter's partnerships with the Greater Palm Beach County community in an effort to save lives and teach life-saving skills. Just a few of the honorees this year were seven Palm Beach County Fire Rescue employees.

These firemen went above the call of duty during the hurricane season of 2004. They were as follows; District Chief Daryl Newport - Station 31 B Shift, District Chief Don Bouse - Station 31 A Shift, Lieutenant Charlie Shinn, Driver/Operator Tom Cook - Station 31 A Shift, Driver/Operator Jim Sims, Firemedic Scott Stanton, Firemedic Tony Acosta - Station 31 A Shift. Congratulations to all the recipients of the awards. Members of Local 2928 Executive Board were also attending, sponsored a table, and were in attendance to honor the members of the local.

Channel 5 Visits Station 31 for Fourth of July Special

July 2nd, 2004 - Orly Greenberg of Channel 5 came to Station 31 at 4:30am to film a segment about the potential dangers of fireworks with children and the dry brush season during this Fourth of July.  Several fireworks were detonated to produce explosive effects that also sparked fires when placed near small amounts of hay.  This effect was used to show how easily fireworks can start a brush fire during this dry season. Station 31 crews demonstrated with ordinary fireworks purchased from the local vendors on any corner in Palm Beach County.

"C" Shift gets a Gourmet Meal

The mighty "C" shift was lucky enough to have Robert Scambia from Clermont, Florida to come to Station 31 and cook a gourmet dinner for the crew. Chef Scambia said he wanted to do something for the men and women of the fire service and this was his way to give something back to the firefighters that were lost on September 11th.  He was going around to different fire stations and preparing a meal and sharing different stories of his tribute.

Chef Scambia is a very sincere, down to earth man and has taken on a very personal project to spend hours at a fire station to prepare a special meal for the crew on duty and it was greatly appreciated.

Happy Birthday to the Special Operations Driver Tom Cook.

The Boys on "A" Shift went out and bought Tom Cook a very special outfit for his 50th Birthday.  Nothing better than getting all dressed up on such a special occasion.  To see Tom wearing his new "birthday suit", click here.

This year the "Guardians of the Corridor" Chili Cook-Off theme was "CIGAR BAR CHILI".  Where you can come by and taste a nice cup of homemade chili that was cooked just like Grandpa used to make with many secret ingredients and then aged to perfection, enjoy your favorite cold beverage, and at the same time, have a "Gunther's Choice" Cigar, all while sitting down and watching the College Football game on the Big Screen TV.

Cigar Bar Chili won for Best Theme.

Good chili.  Cold beverages.  Great Cigars!

PALM BEACH COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE AND FIRE RESCUE TEAM UP FOR “CANDY FOR KIDS”

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Corporal Richard Angelo in partnership with firefighters from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue are proud to announce the first annual “Candy For Kids” project.

This project entails providing boxes to each Fire Rescue station throughout Palm Beach County in order for citizens to donate bags of wrapped candy for underprivileged children in the Kenwood Estates Community to have a safe Halloween. Corporal Angelo and Kenwood Estates community leaders mirrored this “Candy For Kids” operation after the “Toys for Tots” program.

Corporal Angelo contacted Okeeheelee Middle School Art Department teacher Heather Beebe to request 7th grader’s assistance in decorating boxes with a Halloween theme.  A Special thanks goes to Brandi Yaun who made up a Gargoyle theme for Station 31's Halloween candy box.

On Friday, October 3, 2003, Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Undersheriff William Tremer, Palm Beach County Commissioner Warren Newell and a Fire Rescue representative will be presenting gifts to approximately 60 7th graders for their hard work and creativity in creating these boxes.

Additionally Corporal Angelo will be holding an annual “Movie in the Park” event at the Kenwood Park on Halloween night. At that time, the Kenwood Estates community leaders and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Problem Oriented Policing Unit will be handing out all donated candy. There will also be a haunted house and costume contest. Last year over 100 children attended this event.
